Why do dogs need spinal surgery?
Surgery on the back or neck, for disc disease, Wobbler syndrome, trauma or other causes, relieves pressure on the spinal cord. Recovery takes time as nerves heal, and dogs often need help relearning to walk and rebuilding strength safely without stressing the surgical site.
Common reasons for surgery
- Disc herniation (IVDD)
- Wobbler syndrome (neck compression in large breeds)
- Spinal fractures or instability
How rehab helps
- Starts gentle, safe movement early in recovery
- Retrains walking, balance and coordination
- Prevents muscle loss and joint stiffness
- Prepares you to care for your dog at home
What to expect in rehab for Spinal surgery
Rehab begins gently, protecting the surgical site while keeping muscles and joints healthy. As your dog's nerves recover, we progress from assisted standing and walking to independent walking, then to balance and strength work. Your surgeon and our rehab team coordinate on what is safe at each stage.
